Essentially all brands are but have realistic expectations. Would you post about your period undies on your socials to your friends? Probably not but you would if you were being paid. But you would post about a great restaurant, new outfit, makeup finds, new furniture, your breakfast smoothie recipe etc.
So, you’ve got an amazing product and you’re ready to flood the market with it through influencer gifting. But before you sign up and list your #Gift, let’s make sure your product is actually a good fit for this kind of collab. Because let’s face it, not every product is going to make influencers jump up and down with excitement (no offence, but some things are just a little... tricky to promote).
Here’s a quick guide to help you figure out if your product is best suited for influencer gifting or if it might be time to consider a different strategy, like paid placements.
Influencers are like the rest of us—they want to share things they love, things that make their lives better, or things that make them feel good! But some products are a bit too niche.
Products that Might Struggle:
If you’re offering a service that’s only available in a specific location (especially somewhere remote), influencers who don’t live within direct vicinity might not be interested, no matter how amazing the service is.
Before you start sending out snack boxes to influencers, think about whether your product really stands out. Influencers get pitched tons of products every day, so your snack or food item needs to stand out. If it’s just another generic product they could grab in the supermarket it may struggle to grab attention.
Even if you’re gym is the best in town - most people already have their preferred gym. Convincing an influencer to migrate gym is hard work, and tricky when it comes to a Gifted collab.
We all know that Instagram is a visual platform, and some products just don’t photograph well. If your product isn’t the type to make someones grid look 10/10, you might find it hard to get influencers on board.
Products that Might Struggle:
While super important, breastfeeding products might not be the type of thing influencers want to display in their feed. It takes a certain comfortability, and not everyone is quite there yet!
The Sugar Bear Hair Gummies days have had their time in the influencer world. Great for the time, but influencers have moved on and no longer want to be seen endorsing wellness supplements that they don’t 100% love personally! Unless it’s a well-known brand or has a unique selling point, influencers might not be thrilled to promote yet another supplement that doesn’t stand out in a crowded market.
Some products, though important, can be a bit awkward to talk about. Influencers are all about authenticity, and if they’re not 100% comfortable with the product, that’s going to come through in their content.
Products that Might Struggle:
Let’s be real, these are still a bit taboo for some people. Influencers might hesitate to share this kind of content unless they’re already in the sex-positive space and have a very open audience.
TMI ALERT - While necessary, these can be tricky to gift because they’re so personal. The audience for these products is usually specific, and influencers might not feel comfortable promoting them without compensation.
Anything related to digestion or gut health might make influencers (and their audience) a little squeamish, so it’s not always the easiest sell.
If your product falls into any of these categories, it might be worth considering paid placements instead. By offering influencers compensation, you can encourage them to take a closer look at your product and consider promoting it, even if it’s not something they’d usually pick up on their own.
Remember, the goal is to get your product into the hands of people who will genuinely love and share it. If your product isn’t a natural fit for gifting, that’s okay! Paid placements can be a fantastic way to get the buzz you’re looking for, with the added benefit of a bit more control over how your product is presented.
So, take a good look at your product and decide if gifting is right for you—or if it’s time to consider a different path to success.
